Home office

Do you or any of your staff work from a home office?

When you’re working from a home office, space can be limited or less than ideally suited to healthy working standards. With careful planning and relative ease, your home-based office work space can be set up to provide you with a healthy working environment.

Health and safety compliance issues

Both self employed and those employees working away from a standard office for their company are required to comply with the health and safety standards under the Health and Safety in Employment Act (2002) where all possible steps are taken to isolate, minimise or eliminate hazards.

Education in safe use of equipment, including computers, is an important part of this compliance.

SitRight WorkWell can help you:

    • Set up your home office to safe ergonomic standards
    • Make effective use of your available space
    • Ensure sufficient lighting by measuring light levels and providing you with written recommendations for improvement if necessary
    • Prioritise the steps you can take to ensure a healthy workplace on a limited budget

Aspects to consider include:

  • Good desk space for the work you do, and good storage space around the desk
  • Good lighting – home offices can be very challenging, for instance with small rooms, lower domestic lighting and no blinds to eliminate glare
  • Setting up your laptop correctly if you are using it for more than 20 minutes at a time, to avoid neck/shoulder pain
  • Consideration of intensive tasks such as phone use – could it be worth getting a phone headset?
  • Taking breaks – how do you pace out your day to minimise the risk of a build up of muscle tension?

Outside the wider Christchurch area? Book a workstation assessment via Skype.

Although we work throughout New Zealand, sometimes it’s simply impractical for us to come to you.

Even so, to ensure that you can still be set up correctly we offer Skype consultations and can help with workstation set up virtually anywhere.  All you need is internet access, an appointment and someone else with you to move the web camera as necessary.

If you are outside the wider Christchurch region simply email us and we’ll be in touch to make an appointment to conduct your workplace assessment at a time that’s suitable for you.

Jane provided me with straightforward advice on my workstation and desk set-up. Her approach was practical and easy to implement. I was staggered to find that a few adjustments to my workstation quickly resulted in relief from existing shoulder and wrist pain.

    • Working on the move?

Do you spend time on the move? At a hot desk. On your mobile phone?
If the answer to any of those is ‘often’, then the probability of you feeling neck pain or shoulder pain is high.

Contact us to assess if your mobile and equipment usage outside of the normal workplace is affecting your health.

While it’s relatively easy to identify and manage obvious workplace hazards, (like chemicals or industrial machinery) it can be easy to ignore or overlook day-to-day niggles or discomfort related to everyday tasks or the general workspace environment. Find out more about your obligations.
